The Society now has a new home! The Caperton Society has been hosted by White Rose Web Design at no cost to us for over 12 years now and I cannot thank them enough for their hospitality! they have been marvelous. The owner however, after nearly 25 years in the business, (yes the internet has really been around that long!) is retiring and moving on to a new adventure. This initially posed a challenge as I had gotten quite used to White Rose 'taking care of business' as it were. After some significant research we now have a new home which, while no longer free, is very reasonable and should be a long-term solution whch again the owner of White Rose was fantastic in assisting with the decision making process! Once the move was sorted out, I began creating a new website that would be easier for me to manage and update.
The new site is up and running and accepting new registrations. Additionally if you were already registered you should be able to log in with your normal user name and password you used on the old site, UNLESS you have received an email separately. there were 4 unlucky new members that I was not able to move their informaton over and I have already emailed them to let them know what they need to do to access the site.
So Whats New:
New Look
The layout has stayed the same. the menus are the same unless I have added a library, so it should still have the same feel you were used to with the old site. The look however has ben updated to work better with mobile devices and to streamline the different projects into a uniform look. Note that I did say 'work better' I did not say work perfectly! I will continue to improve the interface as I move forward.
Hundreds of new Source documents
I have added several hundred new source documents, check the Whats Available page to see what has been updated. the link to this page can be found at the bottom of most pages.
Re-Scan of confederate Documents
I have rescanned the entire confederate documents collection and have placed the vast majority of them back online.
BMC vs DLC
I have begun adding a new column to most document listings. The Society Website has always tried to link source documents to Bernard Capertons book The Caperton Family. Over the years we have developed additional information that shows new connections/links to varous Caperton Trees. However, since many of us still have and use Bernard's book to track ancestors I have added a new column with the Header DLC. This will typically be next to th BMC henry number and will identify the documents new henry number IF it has changed.
Old site coming to an end
The old site at caperton.info will remain online for a while yet though Registration on that site has been disabled. It was a difficult decision on my part to change to a new domain name as I have been using Caperton.info since August of 2002, but in the end this was the best decison.
Future of New site
It is important to understand that while the hosting is no longer free, registration on the new site WILL continue to be free. I may add incentives in the future for those wishing to help financially, but I will NOT put advertising on the site, nor will I start charging to register on the site. Simply NOT going to happen!
Please check out the new site and let me know what you think!
